Benefits of Personal Care Days
San Luis Obispo's homeless veteran, men, women, children, and babies are provided with kindness, a warm meal, personal-care items, and assistance from San Luis Obispo's homeless service providers offering transitional housing opportunities, medical, legal, government, job placement, training and other services to stop the cycle of homelessness.
KNMF Job and College/Trade School Fair Event
The event will commence at 9 a.m. with an opening ceremony, followed by a warm meal, and the distribution of personal care items, clothing, shoes, blankets, hygiene supplies, military surplus goods, medical / dental care, legal council, job training and placement, veteran services, and assistance with placement in continuum of care transitional housing facilities. Employers and Human Resources experts will provide job counseling and placement services.
Veterans and Employment
Employment continues to be the number one problem in Los Angeles for homeless and formerly homeless veterans.
Veteran service providers are charged with the objective to meet the basic survival needs of homeless and formerly homeless veterans, leaving little time to focus on establishing a means to see that veterans are employed in career ladder positions suitable to the individual.
A few transitional housing providers have established in-house training and service industries as means to provide a trade to veterans; however, most of these means of employment are low-paying, dead-end jobs.
The Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation, through UCLA-REI and Medical Center, was successful implementing a pilot recruitment / hiring system that has reached out to employ veterans and other needy persons.
Recruiting and Hiring System
Federal, State, and local government employers, private-sector employers, and transitional housing providers are invited to participate and place homeless and formerly homeless veterans in jobs at the Job and College/Trade School Fair and assist others to prepare for training / employment.
Support and program management from Human Resources Managers and Specialists in government, corporate America, and the State of California Employment Development Department will help make this aspect of the event a success.
Job Fair and College/Trade School Fair
You are invited to participate at the Job Fair and College/Trade School Fair. You will be provided an opportunity to recruit job-ready veterans for opportunities with your company, agency or to enroll in paid and non-paid trade training programs. KNMF opens this event to all veterans in San Luis Obispo County. Additionally, formerly homeless veterans completing continuum of care programs in transitional housing may participant along with unemployed veterans. We expect to serve 200 participants. The event will be held in conjunction with a Veterans Personal Care Day "Stand Down".

United States Office of Personnel Management Pursues Veterans Though Partnership with The Los Angeles, California Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation For Homeless Veterans and Children
"In this way we are making a small payment on the debt of gratitude all American's owe our veterans for their courageous service," stated Director James.
Washington, DC - Under the direction of U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Kay Coles James, OPM staff experts recently traveled to the west coast to participate in the "Veterans' Day Stand Down and Job Fair" being by The Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation (KNMF) For Homeless Veterans and Children in Los Angeles, California.
"I congratulate you on your commendable efforts to help America's veterans find employment," stated James in a letter to the Foundation's Executive Director. She went on to explain OPM outreach efforts saying, "Under the Veteran Invitational Program (VIP), OPM has been reaching out to veterans nation-wide to help them learn more about and successfully compete for Federal employment. In this way we are making a small payment on the debt of gratitude all American's owe our veterans for their courageous service."
"The Office of Personnel Management, representing all Federal employers, paved the way for veterans to apply for Federal careers," stated Doris Nickelson, KNMF Executive Director. "Many of the veterans who were employed rounded out the event by applying for new careers or lateral careers to open their employment horizons. Being able to apply online also simplified the employment process for everyone involved."
OPM employees staffed an information booth during the fair and educated the groups on veterans' preference and veteran appointing authorities, as well as the USAJOBS.opm.gov website and the Federal application process. One of the key take-home products is the OPM-produced DVD "What Veterans Need to Know About Veterans' Preference," a comprehensive 40 minute video seminar of veterans' preference rights and eligibilities.
Available at USAJOBS.opm.gov, OPM also has produced valuable online resources including the VetsInfo Guide which provides general information about how the system works and how veterans' preference and the special appointing authorities for veterans operate within the system. Also available is the VetGuide which gives detailed information about the special rights and privileges that veterans enjoy in Federal civil service employment.
The Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation conducts "stand downs," Personal Care Days for homeless veterans and other homeless men, women, and children living on the streets of Los Angeles. They provide veterans with medical, dental, vaccines, legal, employment, and transitional housing services and opportunities. They also distribute clothing, shoes, blankets, non-perishable food, hygiene supplies, gifts, toys and warm meals.
"It is a true honor to work with the good people of the foundation. They are an inspiration to all of us," added James.
With the generous support of donors, resources, and volunteers, KNMF has been able to help tens of thousands of needy individuals over the years by responding to their needs.
Personal identifiable information, including name, address, e-mail, and telephone/fax number provided by donors, volunteers, employers, colleges, trade schools, veteran service providers, or others is for the sole use of KNMF and will not be disclosed.
